The Sandwich Generation—the new family challenge

0 to 60 , a novel, aptly portrays what happens today as people live longer—grandparents, parents and children blend their own sets of unique age-related problems usually to the detriment of the generation in the middle. In 0 to 60  a sixty year old woman is faced with the issues of her ninety year old parents as well as those of her 30-something children. She is sandwiched in between owing allegiance to each. She is part of the sandwich generation

Millions are caught in this same predicament—some estimate twenty to twenty-five million Americans now makeup the sandwich generation—simultaneously facing problems at both ends of their family spectrum. And few are prepared when it happens.

Like others caught in between, Shelly Sinclair in 0 to 60 must put her life on hold while caring for aging parents and seeking to continue as a parent to her own children. And she had no warning. How had her father’s health failed so quickly or her mother slipped so rapidly into dementia? Suddenly they simply could not care for themselves and were dangerously inept at managing even day-to-day living.

Her parents who survived a depression and a world war were from a proud generation—ones who took care of themselves and didn’t rely on others. And never planned for their own infirmity. It would be up to Shelly to make the decisions—only hoping that they would be the right ones.

But how should she take the car keys away from her father? Choose care that would meet their needs? Handle their finances? All compounded by her living some six hundred miles away. 0 to 60 explores the options and spins a tale that anyone in the sandwich generation can relate to.
